SURFACE PREPARATION
Ensure all substrates are thoroughly clean, sound, dry and free from any contaminants such as dirt, rust, salt, algae, fungi, lichens, oil, grease and loose, flaking paint.
Metal Surfaces
Remove all loose, flaking and embedded rust, mill scale and paint by scraping off with either coarse sandpaper, a wire brush, a grinder, or sandblast (for large areas). Finish with a fine grain sandpaper, sanding to a smooth surface.
For galvanised substrates, clean the substrate with a galvanised Iron Cleaner, following product instructions. Inaccessible rust should be removed with a Rust Remover product following instructions given.
Once metal is returned to a sound condition, ensure the appropriate primer or undercoat is applied within 12 hours of surface preparation. For coastal areas painting should be done immediately after preparation, to prevent contamination and oxidation.
Unpainted Surfaces – New or Weathered
Granular, cement and fibre-cement roof tiles/sheets
Not suitable for clay, slurry or slate tiles
Prime with Sparcolux Plaster Primer or Sparcolux Keybond as per instructions.
Cement plaster, concrete and brickwork
The substrate must be aged for at least 28 days prior to priming. Prime with Sparcolux Plaster Primer following instructions.
Galvanised iron roofs
Clean substrate with an Iron Cleaner following instructions. Prime with a Galvanised Iron Primer within 12 hours or immediately for coastal environments, following instructions.
Wood
Sand lightly, dust off, seal knots and prime with Sparcolux Wood Primer following instructions.
PVC gutters and downpipes
Sand lightly and dust off. Prime with Sparcolux Metal Primer following instructions.
Chromadek, Aluzinc Roofing
Clean substrate with a Galvanised Iron Cleaner following instructions.
INLAND: Within 12 hours, prime with Sparcolux Metal Primer, following instructions.
COASTAL: Immediately after cleaning, rinsing and drying, prime with Sparcolux Metal Primer, following instructions.
PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES
Sound surfaces
Apply Sparcolux Rubberkoat directly to clean, sound and dry acrylics.
Chalk or flaking surfaces
Remove chalk or loose, flaking paint completely with a wire brush, sandpaper or high-pressure cleaner. Repair as required. Rinse and allow to dry. Apply Sparcolux Kerybond or Bonding Liquid as per instructions. Prime with the appropriate primer as for new surfaces
Care should be taken to ensure that no water pooling occurs and that there is a minimum of 2-5º pitch to allow water run off throughout the entire roof area.
