Metal Etch Primer

Sparcolux Metal Primer is a quick drying, anti-corrosive etch primer for use on mild steel, aluminium, galvanised iron and smooth metal surfaces. This one-pack product can also be used as a primer on hard-to-adhere-to PVC piping and gutters.

This versatile Etch Primer gives excellent adhesion on a wide range of substrates and can be overcoated with a wide range of products including Universal Undercoat, enamels and epoxy tar compounds, but not for typical epoxy enamels.

Sparcolux Metal Primer can be overcoated with Sparcolux Gloss Enamel or Sparcolux Quick dry enamel.

  • SURFACE PREPARATION

    Ensure all substrates are thoroughly clean, sound, dry and free from any contaminants such as dirt, salt, rust, mill scale, algae and grease. 


    New metal

    • Abrade surface lightly and remove any surface rust or mill scale by sanding, wire brushing or sandblasting (sandblasting to SA2½ with a 40-50 profile for best results)
    • Clean away sanding dust, grease and dirt with Metal Cleaner/Degreaser according to instructions 
    • Rinse with water until a water break-free surface is attained and allow to dry

    Aluminium and stainless steel: 

    • Abrade surface with 200-220 grit waterpaper using Xylene or Turpentine as a lubricant. 
    • Rinse with Xylene or lacquer thinners and allow to dry
