Universal Undercoat
Sparcolux Universal Undercoat is a general purpose, high opacity undercoat for a wide range of primed or painted interior and exterior surfaces.
Our Universal Undercoat is a top quality alkyd-based undercoat that improves intercoat adhesion between a primer and either an oil based or water based topcoat. This Universal Undercoat offers excellent ‘hold-out’ where topcoating a water based primer with a solvent based enamel.
This Universal Undercoat is a high build, self-levelling product that offers excellent obliteration, hides imperfections and can act as a sealer for hard-to-obliterate stains such as nicotine or water stains. This product can be sanded to a smooth finish.

Versatile
Can be used in a wide range of functions and a wide range of substrates. Can be applied to numerous suitable primed surfaces, including plaster, metals and woods. Can be used as an intermediary coat for a wide range of solvent topcoats on water based primers.
Adhesion
Optimum intercoat adhesion between an oil and water based topcoat. Offers excellent adhesion to gloss enamel paints.
Hold Out
Allowing alkyd top coating onto water based primers.
High build
For excellent obliteration, hiding imperfections giving a smooth flawless finish.

SURFACE PREPARATION
- Remove all loose / flaking material with a high-pressure cleaner, scraper or wire brush.
- Sand smooth any glossy surfaces. Treat algae or fungi prior to painting.
- Thoroughly clean any surface contaminants with Sugar Soap.
- If painting on plaster or concrete, fill all holes and cracks prior to painting.
New Surfaces
Universal Undercoat should not be applied onto unprimed surfaces.

Prime with Sparcolux water or solvent based

Previously Painted
Water based paint:
Remove fungal growth, lichens, and loose and powdery flaking paint with a scrubbing brush or a high pressure water jet. Apply one coat of an anti-fungal wash if necessary. Wash down well with water and allow to dry. Spot prime exposed plaster, wood and metal as for new surfaces. Prime powdery surfaces with Sparcolux solvent-based Plaster Primer according to instructions.
Oil based paint:
The surface should be abraded to a matt finish to aid adhesion and wiped down with a clean cloth. Spot prime exposed plaster, wood and metal as for new surfaces.
