INTERIOR BUILDING BOARDS
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Building boards and sheets come in varying types, some supplied pre-primed or factory finished.
- Manufacturers’ recommendations should be strictly adhered to.
- Specific building board types are looked into below and painting recommendations given.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUILDING BOARDS
Asbestos Cement Boards & Sheets
Alkaline in nature and therefore any oil-based paints applied will result in Saponification if the sheets are damp.
Treatment
- If the boards are likely to get damp by virtue of location (wall cavities or roof spaces), it is advised that the boards are primed first.
- Apply the Sparcolux alkali resistant Solvent-based Plaster Primer as a primer, which will serve to neutralise the high alkalinity.
Choose your topcoat from one of our Sparcolux range of Wall & Ceiling paints.
Fibre Insulating Board
These boards are sometimes treated with flame retardant. Flame retardant may surface if boards come into contact with moisture.
Treatment
- Avoid applying water thinned PVAs as the first coat, as there are risks of efflorescence.
- Apply the Sparcolux alkali resistant Solvent-based Plaster Primer as an effective alkali resistant primer.
- Be sure to prime backs, cut-edges and edges of fibre boards to reduce risk of buckling and bending.
Choose your topcoat from one of our Sparcolux range of Wall & Ceiling paints.
Fibre Boards (Hard)
Hard surfaced boards of high density, e.g. Masonite
Treatment
- Despite their hard, smooth surface the surface should NOT be rubbed down in preparation.
- Solvent-based paints should NOT be applied directly to the board as the hardboard will interfere with the paint drying.
- Prime the Hardboard with Sparcolux Plaster Primer.
- Back priming is advised where condensation is likely.
Choose your topcoat from one of our Sparcolux range of Wall & Ceiling paints.
Plasterboard/ Paper based board
Used extensively in dry-lining systems
Treatment
- Manufacturers’ recommendations should be adhered to
Wood based board & Sheets
Includes wood chip and particle board. May be paper-faced
Treatment
- Priming of backs and edges before fixing is advised, especially if risk of condensation is likely.
- Use Wood Primer and Universal Undercoat.
Choose your topcoat from one of our Sparcolux range of Wall & Ceiling paints.
Expanded Polystyrene tiles and Sheets
Polystyrene expanded products
Treatment
- Manufacturers’ recommendations should be adhered to
- Use water-based Wall & Ceiling paints only.
- Solvent paints may attack the material while an oil-based paint constitute a fire hazard and therefore must NOT be applied.
